SmartTrays

JonesZylon SmartTrays self-locking correctional meal trays stacked

Solid molded, self-locking 5-compartment meal trays designed specifically for correctional food service — engineered to protect food, stack stably, and hold up to the demands of daily institutional use.

SmartTrays self-lock when stacked, with the bottom of each tray acting as the lid for the one below — eliminating the need for individual lids on every tray. Only the top of each stack requires a lid. SmartTray XD offers extra depth to prevent food contact between stacked trays while accommodating larger portions — the tradeoff is slightly fewer trays per cart, so facilities may need a larger cart or additional units. SmartTrays are also available as a standalone compartment tray for facilities that need correctional food trays without the full ServeSmart cart system.

  • 5 compartments with sealed separation
  • Self-lock — stack in any orientation and height
  • Bottom of one tray acts as lid for the next
  • Underside headspace keeps food off tray bottoms
  • Condiment & flatware compartments
  • Available in copolymer or MaxFlex blend
  • MaxFlex option provides added safety — less weaponizable for higher-security environments
  • Stock colors: Brick, Brown, Royal & Teal
  • Lids only needed for top of stack

SmartTrays vs. Insulated Trays: The Long-Term Cost Difference

Tray Replacement Costs

One of the most compelling reasons correctional facilities switch to the ServeSmart system is total cost of ownership. Insulated trays typically see a replacement rate of around 50% per year — a significant ongoing expense at any volume. SmartTrays, by contrast, are built for institutional durability with a conservative replacement rate of approximately 10% annually, and in practice many facilities see even lower. That difference compounds quickly across a large fleet.

Eliminating the Insulated Cart

The ServeSmart system also eliminates the need for an insulated cart altogether. Rather than buying both a heated or ambient cart and a set of insulated trays, facilities get a single integrated system where the cart and tray work together to maintain temperature and protect food during transport. Fewer carts are needed because SmartTrays stack more efficiently than bulky insulated trays, meaning you can move more meals per run.

The 3–5 Year View

For facilities evaluating both approaches, the numbers tend to favor ServeSmart significantly over a 3–5 year horizon. We're building a full cost comparison calculator to help make that decision easier — in the meantime, reach out and we can walk through the numbers with you directly. You can also explore our full line of compartment trays for corrections if you're evaluating tray-only programs alongside the full ServeSmart system.

ServeSmart — Frequently Asked Questions

ServeSmart moves the insulation from the tray to the cart, which means more consistent temperatures and significantly lower replacement costs. Insulated trays typically need 40–50% replacement annually, while SmartTrays routinely last five years or more. They're also less bulky (requiring fewer delivery carts), easier to clean, and offer better food presentation.

SmartCarts are built with stainless steel, heavy-duty corrections-grade construction designed to withstand the demands of daily use in correctional facilities. Premium casters are easy to upgrade or replace, and the carts come with a 1-year parts and labor warranty. The interior is fully sanitary and cleans to a like-new appearance.

SmartCarts range from 54 to 204 meals depending on the model, with SmartTrays stacking up to 18 high per column. SmartTrays are precision-sized to fit each cart exactly, maximizing capacity without wasted space.

Each SmartTray's compartments are sealed off from one another, and the underside of each tray provides headspace above the food below — preventing contact and keeping meals intact during transport. Lids are available for every tray or just the top of each stack depending on your facility's requirements. For larger portions, SmartTray Extra Deep trays offer additional clearance while maintaining the same stackable design. A full complement of trays are provided for free with each purchased SmartCart.

SmartCart heaters are easily removable without the need of any tools — if one fails, staff can swap in a backup in minutes with zero downtime. The heaters use non-proprietary parts, so your maintenance team can likely repair them in-house. We also offer Uptime Maintenance Kits that include the most commonly replaced parts, so you always have backups ready to go.

SmartCarts operate on standard 120V power on standard household 15-amp outlets — no special wiring or dedicated circuits required. Detachable power cords and steel braided cord options are available for added durability and safety.

Yes. ServeSmart products are manufactured in the USA and are certified to meet UL and NSF sanitation standards, backed by a 1-year parts and labor warranty.
